Canadian Pharmacy Alerts Americans to Counterfeit Online Drugs

One of the largest online pharmacies in Canada, NorthWestPharmacy has issued a warning to consumers about buying from various unaccredited “Canadian pharmacies” due to the high risk of receiving counterfeit drugs online. Of particular concern are websites that purportedly offer Canada’s drugs from a Canadian pharmacy without a prescription to Americans.

“No legitimate Canadian online pharmacy will let you buy Canadian prescription drugs without a prescription and many of them have been found to sell counterfeit drugs online,” says Ankur Arora, a lawyer who inspects licensed international pharmacies for NorthWestPharmacy.

“I’ve seen lots of excellent pharmacies and I’ve seen some really terrible ones,” says Arora. Based on his experience, NorthWestPharmacy implements strict review procedures for every international pharmacy it works with which includes on-site checks by a lawyer for such things as proper licensure, pedigree and chain of custody, appropriate dispensing practices and even the reputation of the owners of the pharmacy. Arora says another key factor is that “NorthWestPharmacy conducts random chemical testing of its own drug supply through an FDA-approved lab which is further bolstered by chemical testing through mystery shopping by the Canadian International Pharmacy Association of which NorthWestPharmacy is a certified member.” NorthWestPharmacy has never found a counterfeit in its supply chain to date, prompting Mr. Arora to pat himself on the back. “I must be doing a good job at weeding out the bad guys then.”

NorthWestPharmacy recommends that consumers only buy from genuine Canadian pharmacy websites which offer both low cost and safe international and Canadian drugs online. Only buy Canada’s drugs online from a Canadian pharmacy website which is also buySAFE, TRUSTe and Pharmacy Checker approved.
